What is Cybercore Summer Camp?

Cybercore Summer Camp is an exciting opportunity for middle and high school students to delve into the world of cybersecurity and information assurance. These camps are designed to introduce and expand knowledge in cybersecurity, focusing on how computers, programs, networks, and people can be exploited by hackers and the measures we can take to prevent or mitigate these threats. Participants will also get the chance to tour Idaho National Laboratory’s world-class facilities, interact with peers, mentors, and industry experts, and develop relationships that could shape their future careers.

What You Will Learn

Introduction Camp

  • Introduction to Raspberry Pi: Learn the fundamentals of using a Raspberry Pi for programming, circuit design, and more.
  • Computing Basics: Learn to navigate and operate using Windows and Linux.
  • Programming: Get started with Python programming.
  • Circuit Design: Understand the basics of circuit design and cyber-physical systems.
  • Data Representation: Explore binary, hex, encoding, and cryptography.
  • Online Safety: Learn safe and secure online behavior.
  • Social Engineering: Understand the tactics used in social engineering attacks.
  • System Management: Manage and secure Windows and Linux systems.
  • Networking: Gain basic networking knowledge.
  • Education & Career Pathways: Engage in discussions about pathways into cybersecurity.

Advanced Camp

  • Advanced Programming: Dive deeper into Python and explore other programming languages.
  • Network Security: Understand advanced techniques in network hacking and defense.
  • Cryptography: Master complex encryption, ciphers, binary, decimal, and hexadecimal systems.
  • Cyber-Physical Systems: Work with a Pi expansion kit that includes sensors, motors, lights, and other circuit elements.
  • PC Building Workshops: Learn the intricacies of building and configuring a personal computer.
  • Wireshark: Explore packet capturing and network analysis with Wireshark.
  • Network Discovery and Scanning: Learn tools for network discovery and vulnerability scanning.
  • Linux Security Tools: Explore advanced Linux tools used in the cybersecurity field.
  • Ethical and Legal Issues: Discuss the ethical and legal aspects of cybersecurity and their implications.
  • Education & Career Pathways: Engage in discussions about pathways into cybersecurity.

  • Binary Challenges: Solve puzzles and challenges using binary code.
  • Social Engineering Activities: Participate in interactive activities to understand and prevent social engineering attacks.
  • OSINT Challenges: Utilize Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques to solve real-world cases.
  • Cybersecurity Escape Rooms: Use your skills to solve challenging puzzles and escape from our Cyber Mayhem Escape Rooms.

Program Objectives

Aligned with Idaho National Laboratory’s Homeland Security Mission, Cybercore Summer Camps aim to enhance cybersecurity awareness by providing hands-on experiences that deepen students’ understanding of the field. These camps teach cyber-physical systems concepts through practical, real-world applications, inspiring students to explore career opportunities in cybersecurity and related fields. Additionally, the camps promote ethical online behavior, instilling the importance of appropriate conduct in the digital realm. By fostering leadership skills, Cybercore Summer Camps empower students to become leaders and ambassadors in cybersecurity. Furthermore, the camps support diversity in the field by encouraging a broad range of students to participate, contributing to a more inclusive cybersecurity workforce.

Special Demonstrations and Facility Tours

Our camps are enriched by demonstrations from our own cybersecurity researchers at Idaho National Laboratory. These experts showcase cutting-edge research and provide real-world insights into the field of cybersecurity. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to tour several INL facilities, including:

  • High Performance Computing Facility: Discover the power and capabilities of high-performance computing.
  • Electric Vehicle Lab: Explore the latest advancements in electric vehicle technology.
  • CAVE (Computer-Assisted Virtual Environment): Experience immersive virtual reality simulations.
  • HoloLens Demo: Interact with augmented reality through the HoloLens technology.

These tours and demonstrations offer students a unique opportunity to learn from professionals who are tackling the nation’s most pressing cybersecurity challenges.
