Clean Energy Integration

Enabling a ‘step-change’ in clean energy deployment

INL works to optimize hybrid energy systems that expand the nation’s integrated energy portfolio, invent new materials and processes for nuclear systems, innovate with advanced intelligent systems, and integrate renewable energy sources to ensure more power is available.

INL continues to expand the collaborative partnership between DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy and DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to:

• Develop new technologies.
• Improve capabilities for hybrid energy systems testing and integration.
• Assist the U.S. Department of Defense in managing and improving reliability of electrical grid systems.
• Expand research partnering with national and international industries.

Bioenergy research

INL’s Bioenergy Program aims to overcome key technical barriers facing the U.S. bioenergy industry. By finding ways to produce biofuels and other value-added products more cost-effectively, the annual costs associated with producing cellulosic feedstock on an annual basis will be reduced by half compared to 2002.

INL leverages diverse expertise, multidisciplinary capabilities, advanced systems and industrial partners. With this foundation, INL effectively addresses feedstock harvesting, fractionation and separation, preprocessing, storage, and pretreatment and transportation systems.

Renewable energy research

INL’s Renewable Energy Program has aligned its mission with the vision of the U.S. Department of Energy. We are working toward making a strong, long-term commitment to implement cost-effective, energy-efficient renewable energy resources. Our work addresses the opportunities and challenges associated with wind, hydro and geothermal power as renewable energy sources.

Hydrogen research

Idaho National Laboratory is at the forefront of hydrogen research and testing. With our expertise and cutting-edge technologies, INL leads the way in helping to make, move, store and use clean hydrogen.
