About the GEM Fellowship program
The mission of The National GEM Consortium is to enhance the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of primarily underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science.
At INL, our mission is to discover, demonstrate and secure innovative nuclear energy solutions, other clean energy options and critical infrastructure. To deliver on these objectives, we must be a leader in attracting and retaining the best, brightest and most diverse talent to the laboratory.

Who can apply?
MS Engineering and Science program applicants:
- Must be a senior or a graduate of an accredited engineering or computer science program at the time of application.
- Must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
- Must contractually agree to intern for two summers with INL, beginning the summer after fellowship appointment.
Ph.D. Engineering and Science program applicants:
- Must be a senior, master’s student, or graduate of an accredited engineering or applied science program at the time of application, and
- Must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
- Must contractually agree to intern with INL the summer immediately after fellowship appointment.
