INL’s EBR-I museum opening for Obscura Day May 6
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — The Experimental Breeder Reactor-I, or EBR-I, will be featured in the official lineup for the sixth annual Obscura Day — a global celebration of exploration and discovery — taking place on May 6. Atlas Obscura (a collaborative guide to the world’s wondrous and curious places) sponsors Obscura Day, which includes more than 170 events in 36 states and 25 countries all on one single day.
On Dec. 20, 1951, EBR-I became the first power plant to produce electricity using atomic energy. Nowadays, the reactor building, a national historic landmark, is a museum open to the public. Visitors can see nuclear reactors and related historic displays and learn about current projects at Idaho National Laboratory.
On Saturday, May 6, EBR-I will open its doors in celebration of Obscura Day. Self-guided or guided tours will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day and are always free of charge.
The facility will officially open for the season on Memorial Day weekend, and will offer tours seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Labor Day weekend.
