(IDAHO FALLS, Idaho) — Following an extensive nationwide search, David Teter has been selected as the Idaho National Laboratory’s next deputy laboratory director for management and operations and chief operating officer. Teter will begin his new role in the spring of 2025. He succeeds Juan Alvarez, who left INL in October to become executive vice president of laboratory operations for Battelle Memorial Institute.

Teter brings nearly 30 years of experience at Los Alamos National Laboratory including extensive experience in strategic planning, managing large-scale infrastructure projects, stakeholder engagement and managing people. After earning his doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he joined Los Alamos as a postdoctoral researcher. He built his career in materials science, eventually overseeing 280 employees as division leader of materials science and technology. He then dedicated his efforts to enabling research and development through efficient operations, becoming director of the weapons infrastructure and planning office at Los Alamos.

His leadership demonstrates excellence in project planning, management, execution and operational leadership.

“I am confident that Dave’s proven leadership through decades of work within the Department of Energy enterprise will ensure that we continue to elevate our impact through cutting-edge fundamental and applied research,” said INL Director John Wagner. “This will be made possible by our world-class management and operations while we work to enhance the communities in which we live and work.”
