Integrated Energy

Water Power Tools

INL develops tools that support planning, analysis and decision-making for hydropower systems, infrastructure upgrades and related water power applications.

HydroBoost

HydroBoost is an optimization solver for hydro power and battery storage systems. Its primary objective is to optimize revenue based on hourly dispatch of the hydro and battery assets with forecast energy market prices. It can be applied to both run-of-river and reservoir storage sites.

IrrigationViz

Plan, model, and compare upgrades to your irrigation system with decision support mapping software developed by US DOE.

NPD HYDRO

The Non-Powered Dam Hydropower Development and Ranking Opportunity Tool is developed to analyze the feasibility of retrofitting existing non-powered dams (NPDs) with generation and energy storage technologies. The tool provides development feasibility ratings based on adding generation paired with energy storage (batteries, hydrogen, pumped storage hydro) to existing NPDs.

Hydropower Flexibility Valuation Tool (HFVT)

This open-source model bridges the gap between utility requirements and practical relicensing needs. It employs sophisticated algorithms to analyze flow rates, power generation capabilities, and market prices to determine optimal dispatch strategies.

AquaPV

The AquaPV toolset provides foundational data and analyses for policymakers, developers, utilities, and financial firms seeking to understand floating PV (FPV) project viability on United States reservoirs and estuaries, assisting in scaling the systematic evaluation and implementation of this concept in the US.

CyberSHIELD

An INL initiative aimed at helping owner/operators of energy generation secure and protect infrastructure and ensure the transition to the energy grid of the future is secure.

Hybrid Storage Systems Integration

The Hydro + Storage Sizing Tool helps hydropower asset owners perform a preliminary assessment of the value of integrating batteries with their facility.
