Two federal funding opportunities available for small businesses
IDAHO FALLS — Idaho National Laboratory is offering assistance to small businesses that wish to pursue vouchers and grants available through two federal programs.
U.S. Department of Energy
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Small Business Pilot program links small businesses with national laboratories. It is intended to help small businesses overcome the technical challenges inherent in bringing clean energy innovations to market.
DOE is offering business vouchers, valued between $50,000 and $300,000, which can be exchanged for national lab technical assistance. For-profit businesses with no more than 500 full-time-equivalent employees are eligible.
The deadline to apply for the vouchers is April 10. Vouchers are available in nine research and development areas:
- Advanced manufacturing
- Bioenergy
- Buildings
- Fuel cells
- Geothermal
- Solar
- Vehicles
- Water
- Wind

U.S. Department of Commerce
The U.S. Department of Commerce, through its National Institute of Standards and Technology, is soliciting Phase 1 small business innovation research and development applications. The program offers small businesses grant funding for research and development.
Successful applicants may be awarded funding of up to $100,000 for a six-month feasibility study.The deadline for submissions is April 14.
Proposals are being accepted in the following areas:
- Advanced sensing for manufacturing
- Biomanufacturing
- Cryptography and privacy
- Cyberphysical systems
- Lab to market
- Materials genome
- Quantum-based sensors and measurements
