What drew me to INL was our talent acquisition team’s leadership and direction. I’ve been recruiting for nearly 10 years, and I knew this is where I wanted to build my career. The most rewarding part of my job is making relationships with historically Black colleges and universities and minority-serving institutions, and recruiting through the GEM Fellowship Program. These are impactful ways to identify, recruit and bring underrepresented talent to the STEM fields.

My research interest has always been in digital engineering and bringing digital transformation to the design, construction and operation of infrastructure. I love INL’s innovative environment, collaborating with professionals from various backgrounds, and the flexibility and growth opportunities offered to employees.

The most rewarding thing has been INL's full support in completing a bachelor’s and two graduate degrees all while working full-time. But what I like most about the laboratory is the people I work with and our common goal to further INL's mission.

Nicolas Woolstenhulme

As a third-generation INL engineer born and raised in southeast Idaho, the laboratory is a family business in a way. But it’s much more than that. It’s a place where engineering and application drive science and research. There have been a lot of test reactors here over the years, but the workhorses that have endured through the decades are the material test reactors, such as INL’s Advanced Test Reactor and Transient Reactor Test Facility. Designing and overseeing experiments in these reactors has put me right at the heart of INL’s enduring mission.

Idaho attracted me to INL as a Nuclear Navy student in 1985. It’s a great place for outdoor activities and raising a family. I left the Navy to start a job here in 1989. Working at the Advanced Test Reactor – a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility – has been the most rewarding part of my job. We do amazing things every day, and every day brings new challenges and rewards for working with a high-quality team.

My job offers extraordinary opportunities to contribute to INL's mission. It expands cutting-edge research to impact the characterization and qualification of critical materials. For example, my team has developed a new system and a suite of novel algorithms to centralize and secure data management, automate data analysis and accelerate scientific discoveries. My favorite things about working at INL are the supportive and flexible work environments, excellent colleagues and world-class research facilities.
