Family Nuclear Science Night

K-12 STEM Education

Each October, the Idaho National Laboratory, the nation’s lead nuclear energy research lab, invites local students and their families to attend Family Nuclear Science Night, a STEM event that introduces visitors to nuclear science, engineering and more.

Families are invited to meet scientists and engineers, engage in hands-on activities and demonstrations, and learn more about the groundbreaking nuclear energy research happening in their backyard.

The United States is in the midst of a nuclear renaissance, and INL is leading the effort to develop innovative solutions that will change the world’s energy future and secure our nation’s critical infrastructure. Activities at Family Nuclear Science Night are designed to make nuclear science topics approachable to students, teach them how INL is building energy abundance and resilience, and inspire them to pursue career opportunities in STEM fields. Students will build atoms, learn about radiological controls, build candy nuclear reactors, explore INL’s interactive STEM trailer, and visit informational booths. Activities will be run by INL researchers and representatives from the nuclear industry, universities and other public organizations.

Family Nuclear Science Night is held in celebration of Nuclear Science Week, which is the third week of October every year. Nuclear Science Week is an international, broadly observed weeklong celebration to focus local, regional and international interest on all aspects of nuclear science.
