Students today, scientists tomorrow: INL hosts 11th My Amazing Future event
For the 11th year, Idaho National Laboratory will gather nearly 150 eighth-grade young women to see what their future could hold: potential careers in science, technology, engineering or math. These students will have the opportunity to interact with researchers, engineers and scientists at INL.
At a time when women are underrepresented in STEM professional fields, the program hopes to show girls how scientific and technical fields can provide exciting professional opportunities.
The event will give young women the opportunity to explore topics such as DNA extraction from a strawberry, cybersecurity, radioisotope thermoelectric generators, hands-on chemistry and more. A total of 15 sessions will be offered at the event.
“My Amazing Future is an opportunity to show young women that the STEM subjects are interesting and exciting, but also that they can provide the foundation for a great career,” INL Laboratory Director Mark Peters said. “It’s important that all students and parents understand career opportunities available in the STEM fields, and that the necessary education and training are available here in Idaho. Because women continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields, those of us in the science and technology industry must continue to spread the message that these careers are for everyone.”
The young women will also have the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker Malin Young during lunch. Young is the deputy director for Science and Technology at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where she is responsible for integrating PNNL’s science and technology capabilities to address critical challenges in science, energy, the environment and national security.
Media is invited to come watch as these young women learn, experiment, explore and discover the wide world that STEM careers can offer for their amazing futures.
