The Biomass Feedstock National User Facility (BFNUF) offers technology and expertise to help the U.S. bioenergy industry overcome biomass challenges during scale up and integration of biomass preprocessing facilities.
The BFNUF is a congressionally designated, national asset designed to help de-risk the scale up of bioeconomy. A reconfigurable preprocessing testbed that is utilized by both public and private sectors, the BFNUF can be utilized to rapidly scale up new processes.

BFNUF Capabilities
Work with Us
There are two primary agreement options for accessing BFNUF, depending on the type of work and partnership needed.
User Facility Agreement
This option is best for nonproprietary research and collaborative use of BFNUF capabilities.
- Each party covers its own costs; no funds are exchanged
- All users must follow INL and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facility rules
- INL has sole authority over facility access, scheduling, and equipment use
- All terms and conditions are non-negotiable
Work conducted under this agreement is nonproprietary
Strategic Partnership Project (SPP) Agreement
This option supports reimbursable work for non-DOE entities.
- Enables DOE staff and facilities to perform work for external partners
- Projects are conducted on a fully reimbursable basis
- Includes standardized terms and conditions covering:
- Intellectual property
- Patent rights
- Funding and payment
