Providing a path to resilience through partnership

July 16, 2018

In the aftermath of 2017’s devastating Atlantic hurricane season, and of Hurricane Maria in particular, the lessons learned in emergency response planning and recovery have been a central focus for agencies, contractors and utilities supporting the recovery in Puerto Rico.

To enable these strategic conversations, DOE’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response’s (CESER) Infrastructure Security and Energy Restoration (ISER) division is taking a larger role in the 2018 Resilience Week Conference. For over a decade, Idaho National Laboratory has facilitated this forum to provide a venue for advancing the resilient infrastructure conversations, technologies, policies and partnerships. The objectives are multifold: to modernize the energy delivery system, enhance the security and resilience of America’s energy infrastructure, and make it easier to recover from disruptions to the energy supply.

Resilience and security experts from across the nation will be contributing to this year’s Resilience Week conversations. Mark Weatherford, former DHS undersecretary for Cyber Security and Communications and now senior vice president and chief cybersecurity strategist for vArmour, and Dr. Vilas Mujumdar, a member of the ASCE board of directors, internationally recognized for his leadership and contribution to addressing resilience and sustainability issues facing the global society, are among the many resilience leaders scheduled to speak this year.

The ISER team works closely with our private and public partners to identify hidden dependencies and risks in our critical infrastructure to ensure a secure and reliable flow of energy across the nation. ISER supports national leadership through teaming with industry, national labs and universities to make certain that the nation’s energy delivery system is secure, resilient and reliable against all hazards. Conferences like Resilience Week provide a great opportunity to engage with our partners to address these critical concerns.

Government and industry representatives, as well as university faculty and students, are encouraged to take part in these important and exciting conversations. Please join us Aug. 20-23 for Resilience Week in Denver, Colorado.
