A Mobile STEM Experience Bringing Nuclear Science to Your Community

The Nuclear Science Trailer is a mobile educational platform designed to engage learners of all ages through hands-on exhibits and interactive demonstrations. It highlights the role of nuclear energy and advanced technologies in powering the nation’s future, while building awareness of the Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) mission. By bringing this experience directly to communities, the trailer helps inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.

Expanding Access to STEM Learning

Developed by INL’s K–12 STEM program, the 29-foot mobile learning center expands access to STEM education by reaching audiences who may not otherwise have the opportunity to visit the laboratory.

It showcases INL’s commitment to workforce development and emphasizes the importance of building a strong pipeline of future professionals in science and engineering fields.

The mobile trailer brings hands-on STEM experiences directly to local communities.

Hands-On Exploration

Inside the trailer, participants explore a series of interactive exhibits that guide them from the fundamentals of atoms and elements to the real-world applications of nuclear energy.

Complex concepts such as radiation are made approachable through engaging, hands-on experiences, including opportunities to simulate working in a glove box.

Try It Yourself!

Use a Geiger counter to measure radioactivity in everyday objects—bringing an invisible phenomenon to life through direct detection.

Interactive exhibits make complex concepts like atomic structure easy to understand.

Powering the Future

A central focus of the trailer is demonstrating how nuclear reactors generate clean, reliable electricity and the critical role nuclear energy plays in the transition to a more sustainable energy future. Participants can also explore how INL advances nuclear innovation through cutting-edge research and technology.

Take a Closer Look!

Interact with a model of the Advanced Test Reactor to explore how scientists test nuclear fuels and materials, and how this research supports the next generation of nuclear energy.

Guided by Experts

Wherever the trailer travels, it is supported by INL staff from a variety of disciplines who guide participants through the exhibits and share their expertise. Additional STEM materials and activities are also available, encouraging continued exploration beyond the trailer experience.

When possible, INL scientists lead hands-on learning opportunities outside the trailer, further enriching engagement and deepening understanding.
