K-12 STEM Education
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) STEM Scholars program is a series of weeklong free summer camps for eastern Idaho students in grades one through 12 that provide hands-on experience with a variety of STEM topics. Our goal is to inspire and educate the next generation of STEM leaders. Using a place-based learning approach, STEM Scholars camps focus on age-appropriate scientific research questions and real-world problem solving to explore various STEM careers and projects.
Each year focuses on different scientific topics and disciplines. Future themes include engineering, cybersecurity, nuclear and environmental concepts.
Students will engage in hands-on learning through classroom activities, fi eld work, data collection and project-based learning. Past students attended a variety of fi eld trips, including to the Idaho Falls Zoo, Museum of Idaho, Experimental Breeder Reactor-I and many others. Students work on in-class projects facilitated by certified teachers, attend field trips and engage with partners and organizations such as the Idaho Falls Fire Department, the Bureau of Land Management, the Department of Environmental Quality and INL subject matter experts to complete presentations and workshops.
Students can enroll in the STEM Scholars program through an online registration process. Registration opens each April and is announced on INL’s social media platforms and through local news outlets.
STEM Scholars 2.0: School Year Edition
This free after-school program is designed specifically for students who have previously attended the STEM Scholars camp. It is hosted once a month during the school year, providing an enriching environment where students can continue their exploration of STEM subjects. Each month, the program focuses on a different theme, ensuring a diverse range of STEM topics are covered. These themes are brought to life through a variety of hands-on activities and engaging presentations, tailored to spark curiosity and deepen understanding.
The program is structured to cater to different age groups, with each month’s session geared toward a specific age demographic. This approach Learn more at stem.inl.gov allows for age-appropriate content and activities, ensuring that all participants can fully engage and benefit from the sessions. Our aim is to foster a continuous connection with students, not only during the school year but also throughout the summer, providing them with ongoing opportunities to learn and grow in the STEM fields.
In addition to the educational components, the program also includes snacks to keep the students energized and focused. All necessary materials for the activities are provided, so students can participate fully without needing to bring anything from home. Furthermore, participants receive INL swag, adding an element of fun and creating a sense of community and pride in being part of the program. We are committed to making this program a valuable and enjoyable experience for all students, nurturing their interest in STEM and supporting their educational journey. By offering this program, we hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators, helping them to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.
