Optional Training Courses
The following training courses are offered after the official workshop on Thursday. If interested, please sign up on the registration form. A schedule of the training courses will be provided once interest is determined and the updated list of training courses is released.
Applications and Simulations
Course 1: TMAP8 (4 hours)
TMAP8 is an open-source, MOOSE-based application for state-of-the-art tritium transport and fuel cycle modeling, supporting the multispecies, multiscale simulations that fusion energy systems need for design, breeding performance, extraction efficiency, and safety analysis. This hands-on workshop starts with an overview of TMAP8’s capabilities and the theory underlying tritium migration modeling, then walks participants through setting up and running their own TMAP8 simulations. We then conclude with an extension to SALAMANDER for multiphysics simulations of breeding and plasma facing components. No prior MOOSE or TMAP8 experience is required.
Course 2: OpenPronghorn (2 hours)
OpenPronghorn, leveraging capabilities in the Navier Stokes module, provides coarse mesh multi-dimensional thermal-hydraulics capabilities for advanced reactor modeling. In this course we will provide more details on the models and techniques at play, then perform a hands-on modeling exercise.
MOOSE Modules
Course 3: Introduction to Stochastic Tools (2 hours)
Learn how to perform stochastic analyses on MOOSE-based models from basic parameter studies to surrogate modeling to Bayesian optimization with active learning.
Course 4: Introduction to the Reactor module (2 hours)
MOOSE’s Reactor Module is widely used to prepare meshes for multiphysics nuclear reactor simulations. This workshop will teach the fundamentals of using the module to prepare example reactor geometry input meshes including fast and microreactor cores.
Course 5: Introduction to Optimization (2 hours)
The optimization module leverages the Toolkit for Advanced Optimization (TAO) library to perform inverse optimization. This is the perfect tool to leverage your experimental data to improve numerical models.
Course 6: Introduction to Subchannel, a Module for Reactor Core Thermal Hydraulics (2 hours)
The subchannel module (SCM), can model single phase coolant flow within subchannel assemblies in various reactor configurations. In this training, we will learn to set up steady state and transient subchannel calculations and couple them with other modules within the MOOSE framework.
Course 7: PorousFlow (~1.5 hours)
Identifying desired PorousFlow improvements along with Q&A session.
Numerical Methods
Course 8: Reinforcement learning in MOOSE (1 hour)
This training will demonstrate the setup procedure for deep reinforcement learning-based controller training within MOOSE.
Course 9: Mortar (~1.5 hours)
Learn about using mortar methods in MOOSE and recent developments to improve robustness.
Course 10: Nonlinear Preconditioning (~2 hours)
PETSc has native support for various nonlinear preconditioning algorithms, including Additive Schwarz Preconditioned Inexact Newton (ASPIN). ASPIN is a powerful method for geometric domain decomposition (similar to linear additive Schwarz). MOOSE has additionally implemented MSPIN which is more appropriate for decomposition by physics fields. We’ll discuss these nonlinear preconditioning algorithms and their application to various physics in MOOSE.
Course 11: Accelerating MOOSE apps with GPUs (8 hours)
MOOSE can now leverage both an MFEM backend and a suite of Kokkos systems based on the libMesh FE representation. These enable using GPUs while keeping things clear and simple to develop just like in regular MOOSE. We will discuss current status of the capabilities and implementation of a physics solver, followed by a hands-on exercise.
