A powerful economic engine
As Idaho’s fifth largest employer of over 6,200 individuals—including highly specialized scientists, engineers and technicians—INL’s economic footprint is extensive and impactful. INL is committed to fostering small business growth and economic development not only in southeastern Idaho but throughout the state. Remarkably, for every job at INL, two jobs are generated in other industries, with nearly 12,600 other Idaho jobs tied to our operations.
Accomplishments and data are from fiscal year 2024.
Reaching small business goals
Fiscal year 2024 was another successful year partnering with small businesses to procure essential goods and services for INL’s missions. INL spent over $448 million with small businesses, with $326 million going to businesses in Idaho. This spending accounts for over 69.7% of the laboratory’s expenditure on goods and services, underscoring our unwavering commitment to empowering local economies and fostering small business growth.
The lab also exceeded all five socioeconomic spending goal areas: small-disadvantaged, historically underutilized business zone, women-owned, veteran-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned.
While the lab purchases materials all over the nation, there is a particular focus on supporting Idaho’s economy. Local businesses are a large part of accomplishing work, and the lab counts on small businesses for items from office supplies to highly technical reviews and analyses.
