PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Harold McFarlane has served his community, state and nation admirably for more than four decades; and
WHEREAS, Feb. 21-27 is National Engineers Week, which is the perfect time to honor a citizen who has distinguished himself and can serve as an example to Idaho’s youth about the importance of a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education; and
WHEREAS, Idaho Rep. Mike Simpson honored Harold McFarlane for his many contributions to the nuclear energy industry with an entry in the Congressional Record; and
WHEREAS: Harold McFarlane has been employed in a number of important leadership posts at Idaho National Laboratory since arriving in 1972; and
WHEREAS: Harold McFarlane, as director of INL’s Space Nuclear Systems and Technology Division, played an important role in facilitating the science that helped power the New Horizons spacecraft, which gave mankind its first up-close look at Pluto; and
WHEREAS: Harold McFarlane is a past president of the American Nuclear Society and past chairman of the International Nuclear Energy Academy whose many honors include an Exceptional Service Award from the Department of Energy; and
WHEREAS: The path Harold McFarlane took to success, went from the University of Texas to the California Institute of Technology, where he earned a Ph.D. in engineering science; and
WHEREAS: Upon the foundation of his university education Harold McFarlane built a distinguished career that has earned him national and international acclaim; Now therefore be it resolved that I, Rebecca Casper, Mayor of the City of Idaho Falls, do hereby proclaim Feb. 23 Harold McFarlane Day in our community, in conjunction with National Engineers Week; and be it further resolved that being National Engineers Week, I further encourage all citizens to emphasize the importance of STEM education in our local and state public schools as well as the need for affordable and accessible higher education.
