Step aboard the “Science Sleigh” this holiday season and journey into the heart of nuclear history.
On Saturday, Dec. 20, the Idaho National Laboratory invites the public to a special anniversary celebration at Experimental Breeder Reactor-I (EBR-I) — where, in 1951, scientists lit four lightbulbs with atomic power for the first time.
The museum is typically open in the summer. This free, family-friendly event offers a rare winter opportunity to explore the historic EBR-I museum, enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and hear a festive EBR-I themed holiday poem read by Liza Raley, INL ambassador and former local radio personality.
Drive yourself or sign up to ride an INL bus. Two bus routes are available:
- Morning tour: Departs at 9 a.m., returns at noon
- Afternoon tour: Departs at 12:15 p.m., returns at 3:15 pm.
Bus space is limited, and seats should fill quickly. Register here to ride the bus for free.

The museum is located 50 miles west of Idaho Falls on U.S. Highway 20. Hours for Dec. 20 are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
