  • U.S. citizens: September 4

Workshop Highlights

The International Safeguards and Security by Design Workshop will provide insights on technical measures that can integrate and apply to advanced and small modular reactors in the planning and design stages to meet legal requirements of future customers and avoid costly retrofits.

During this workshop, participants will learn and engage with Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, International Atomic Energy Agency and laboratory subject matter experts on techniques and methods to:

  • Accommodate international safeguards obligations to make exports more attractive to customers in non-nuclear weapons states
  • Prepare vendors for international regulatory engagements and discussions with regulators on nuclear security and safeguards and how their designs can meet requirements
  • Reduce security risks by increasing the efficacy of physical protection systems, accounting for unique cybersecurity risks posed by new deployment models.
  • Reduce the need to make costly security and safeguard retrofits after the design is locked in
  • Understand the interfaces between safety, security, and safeguards approaches and how they impact one another in the reactor design
  • Reduce the reliance on engineered and capital-intensive approaches in favor of those that rely on intrinsic or inherent processes and safety features

Optional Cybersecurity Workshop:
September 25, 2026

Optional Cybersecurity Deep-Dive Day — A dedicated fifth day exclusively focused on cybersecurity, featuring hands-on demonstrations and interactive exercises.

  • Explore operational nuclear cyber-physical testbeds, including a simulated spent fuel pool and an nuclear material accounting and control cage with integrated physical protection system
  • Participate in a module drawn from our Cyber Supply Chain Risk Management Workshop curriculum
  • Test your skills in an industrial control systems cyber escape room — an engaging, scenario-based challenge for all experience levels

Hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of International Nuclear Security and the Office of International Nuclear Safeguards.
