Cultural Resources at INL

The INL Archives and Special Collections is the historic and cultural resource research component, in coordination with INL Records Management and the INL Research Library, for the INL. The Archives and Special Collections are the custodians of these archival records and institutional objects not only for further usage inside the INL organization but to the public as well. We are here to foster knowledge transfer and research opportunities for technical, historical, environmental, and other relevant purposes.
Purpose of the Archives and Special Collections
INL Archives and Special Collections was established in October 2005 through a Memorandum of Agreement between the DOE–ID and the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office. This MOA represents a component of the Cultural Resource Management Program, preserving tangible elements of the history of INL in a manner reflecting its importance at local, regional, and national levels.
The purpose of the INL Archives and Special Collections is to document functions of government, protect citizens’ rights, enhance civic engagement, improve cultural knowledge, and ensure transparency and accountability of public officials. Archivists ensure authenticity, integrity, preservation, and access to historically significant records for researchers and the public. Lastly, we provide a credible historical account of government and other aspects of society.
To fulfill INL’s mission as the historic and cultural research component of the INL, the INL Archives and Special Collections will contain the cultural record of the tangible and intangible development of the INL and surrounding area. This development includes the evolution of the landscape and built environment as well as that of the corporate culture of INL under various prime and subcontractors, and as its Federal governing body transformed from the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and, finally, to the Department of Energy (DOE).

Public Exhibits
The staff at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Archives and Special Collections create public exhibits to highlight the rich history and significant achievements associated with the laboratory and its contributions to science, technology, and national security. These exhibits are essential for several reasons:
- Educational Outreach: INL exhibits educate the public about the laboratory’s pivotal role in advancing nuclear energy, environmental science, cybersecurity, and other critical research areas. This education is done by showcasing historical documents, photographs, and institutional objects, the exhibits provide a tangible connection to the groundbreaking work conducted at INL.
- Public Engagement: These exhibits foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the laboratory’s contributions to scientific and technological progress. By making these materials accessible, the INL Archives and Special Collections staff engage the community, sparking interest and curiosity about the lab’s ongoing projects and historical legacy.
- Transparency and Accountability: Public exhibits help promote transparency by sharing the laboratory’s history and achievements. They offer insights into the research and development processes at INL, demonstrating the lab’s commitment to innovation, safety, and environmental stewardship.
- Preservation of Heritage: The exhibits underscore the importance of preserving INL’s historical records and artifacts. They highlight the efforts of archivists in maintaining these collections, ensuring that the laboratory’s legacy is protected for future generations.
- Community Connection: Presenting exhibits that focus on the local and regional impact of INL’s work, the Archives and Special Collections staff help build a sense of pride and connection within the community. These exhibits celebrate the contributions of INL employees and the collaborative efforts that drive scientific advancement.
- Inspiration for Future Generations: Public exhibits serve as an inspiration for students, researchers, and the general public. They showcase the achievements and challenges faced by scientists and engineers at INL, encouraging young minds to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).
INL Archives and Special Collections staff create public exhibits to educate, engage, and inspire the public while preserving and celebrating the laboratory’s historical and ongoing contributions to science and technology. These exhibits are crucial for fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of INL’s role in shaping the future.
