Every October, people around the world pause to recognize the discoveries, innovations and everyday impact of nuclear science and educate their communities.
Nuclear Science Week offers learning opportunities through virtual presentations and accessible resources designed to educate new and lifelong learners alike.
This year, the Idaho National Laboratory will celebrate through hands-on events, virtual presentations and creative experiences designed for curious minds of every background.
You don’t need a science background to be part of this — just curiosity.

EBR-1 Virtual Tour
Join us for a guided virtual walkthrough of Experimental Breeder Reactor-1: the world’s first reactor to produce usable electricity from nuclear energy. Discover its history and lasting significance to the field.

INL ARTitorium Takeover
Join INL’s K-12 STEM team for an evening of hands-on STEAM activities, hosted at the Idaho Falls Arts Council ARTitorium. All ages are welcome to come explore.
Nuclear 101: A Newcomer's Guide to Nuclear Energy
Start here if you’re new to nuclear science. This introductory session breaks down the basics of nuclear science and energy for all backgrounds and experience levels. No prior knowledge required.

Nuclear Paint Night
Grab a brush and unleash your inner artist at our nuclear-themed paint night! Guided by an INL graphic designer and tour guide, you’ll create your own nuclear-inspired masterpiece. Ticket purchase covers materials and two drinks per person.

Still Proving the Principle: An Overview of 55 Reactors at the INL Site
From research and test reactors to prototype power and propulsion plants, explore the many types of nuclear reactors built at the site over its rich history and the roles they play in innovation and discovery, in this engaging virtual overview.

Science on Stage
You be the judge! Four INL researchers each get 15 minutes to convince high school seniors and local university undergrads that their work is the most fascinating thing happening at the lab. No lectures, no jargon — just real science from real people. The students will vote to crown a winner. Snacks and drinks provided.
Note: Must be enrolled as a high school senior or university student to participate.

Kate the Chemist
Globally recognized as Kate Biberdorf, “Kate the Chemist” is a chemist, science entertainer, and professor at University of Notre Dame. Known for demonstrations using fire, ice, and explosions, she makes science exciting and approachable for all ages. Dr. Biberdorf is also the bestselling author of several science books and has appeared on programs including The Today Show and Late Night with Stephen Colbert.
Note: This event is presented as part of INL’s K-12 STEM team’s outreach efforts, connecting the community with engaging, accessible science programming. The show is hosted by the Idaho Falls Arts Council.
