b'2020Sample Preparation LaboratoryExtending the life of the current reactor fleet requires a deeper understanding of the degradation mechanisms and service life of in-core structural materials. Likewise, the safe, efficient performance of advanced reactor technologies relies on improved fuel cladding and structural materials. Construction began in 2020 on INLs Sample Preparation Laboratory at the Materials and Fuels Complex. This facility will serve as a national center for accelerated research, development and qualification of nuclear materials. The national infrastructure for mechanical testing, detailed microstructural examination and surface characterization of high-activity irradiated material in the U.S. has been limited. SPL is designed to fill this gap and begins operation in 2024. 77'
