b'2000Multi-Application Small Light Water Reactor Seed funding from the Nuclear Energy Research Initiative (NERI) enabled a team from Idaho, Oregon State University and Nexant (an energy and technology consulting subsidiary of Bechtel) to develop a three-year project called the Multi-Application Small Light Water Reactor (MASLWR). The team designed a 45-megawatt unit capable of generating electricity but also adaptable for process heat applications such as water desalination or district heating. It would be flexible enough for early deployment using conventional nuclear fuels, but adaptable to uranium-thorium and other new, advanced, more efficient fuels. MASLWRs funding ended in 2003, but one of its principal investigators went on to form NuScale Power, the first company to submit a small modular reactor design certification application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. 57'
