b'6 BREACHING AND EXPLOSIVESThe National Security Test Range (NSTR) provides access to capabilities to understand and mitigate emerging challenges being faced on the battlefield. The range is positioned to support a wide variety of full-scale and practical testing opportunities for DOE, DOD, and Homeland Security (DHS), the NNSA, and other federal and industry collaborators. Located about 45 miles west of Idaho Falls, INLs exceptional geography includes 330 acres of isolated desert terrain with eight dedicated test ranges, tactical facilities, and restricted airspace that allow research to be conducted safely and securely. The research and testing capabilities at the NSTR are flexible and adaptable to meet custom requirements and emerging threats. The laboratorys expertise spans ballistics, explosives, and barrier testing. Breaching strategies, high-performance modeling and simulation capabilities, and mission rehearsal support are part of NSTRs capabilities, which offer:A 20,000-lb netTactical-breachingDelay analysis andExplosive and explosive weighttraining testing for vulnerabilityenergetics chemists(NEW) limit An 8-km range fan assessments Scientific test cannons Military, foreign- A 3000-m firing range Barrier testing,(14.5, 20, and 30 mm)improvised, secondary- including vehicle-bornFlyer plates, formed homemade, binary,Explosive-, mechanical-,improvised explosivepenetrators, and custom explosives thermal-, and heavydevice testing improvised devices, Domestic small- breaching techniques Emerging threatand shaped charges.arms and heavy- Foreign weapons, intelligenceweapons ballistics grenades, and rocketsThe NSTR enables a strategic approach to technology development and deployment with the following critical advanced capabilities, equipment, and techniques:Dynamic scientific measurements, such as pressure,High-speed data acquisition from Hi-techniques acceleration, force, strain, velocity, and penetration meDAQ (16 ch, 2 MS/sec/ch, PC-controlled) and National Dedicated manufacturing facilities forInstruments-printed circuit board (2 PXI chassis, secure prototyping and production 96 ch each, 60 MS/sec/ch, extensible) systemsExplosives and energetic-materials characterizationHigh-speed photography and advanced flash x-ray from a material test chamber, electrostaticsystems that offer Phantom cameras, an L3 Titan FXR discharge testing, and acoustic mixing system, and Shimadzu Hyper Vision HPV-X2 cameras13 Capabilities Catalog'
