65 2014 Commercial Small Modular Reactor Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) launched the Carbon Free Power Project as part of its long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions. The project called for building a small modular reactor (SMR) power plant using NuScale Power’s SMR technology. In 2014, project leaders zeroed in on four locations within the Idaho Site with help from INL experts. Idaho engineers are also helping with technical aspects of the project, including modeling and simulation of SMR components and systems. On April 30, 2018, the NRC completed its first and most intensive phase of review for NuScale Power’s design certification application, making it the first SMR application to undergo such review.
