SUMMARY:Space Technology for Advanced Reactors Fueling Innovation in Research and Exploration (STAR☆FIRE) 2026 Summer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The application window is now closed.\n \n View 2026 Agenda\n \n \n 2026 Speaker Catalog\n \nAt the crossroads of space exploration, nuclear science and engineering, aerospace innovation and cutting-edge physics, we welcome you to STAR☆FIRE 2026. Hosted by the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), this prestigious event brings together a select group of undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates for an unmatched opportunity to showcase their research, develop meaningful connections and dive into the latest breakthroughs in the space nuclear field. From July 20-23, the state-of-the-art Collaborative Computing Center on INL’s Idaho Falls campus will serve as the epicenter of collaboration and discovery.\nAs an added highlight, select participants will tour INL’s world-class facilities, including the Materials and Fuels Complex, the Advanced Test Reactor Complex and the historic Experimental Breeder Reactor-I.\nJoin us at this vibrant hub of innovation and inspiration — where the future of space nuclear science takes flight!\nAboutSTAR☆FIRE 2026 unites students and experts to explore nuclear power in space. Our mission is to catalyze discovery, discussion and development in this critical field, paving the way for the next generation of pioneering space endeavors. The previous STAR☆FIRE Summer Workshop, held in July 2025 at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas, gathered 40 students from 18 universities for an immersive two-day event exploring the state of and innovations related to nuclear technology for space applications (see last year’s agenda here). The workshop featured technical presentations, student research showcases and behind-the-scenes facility tours, fostering a comprehensive understanding of space fission systems and building new professional relationships.\nFor StudentsThe committee will select up to 50 applicants for the workshop at INL, with 24 applicants staying an additional day to tour the INL desert Site. The 24 participants for the tour will be chosen through a lottery system before the workshop. INL will provide funding for airfare and accommodations for select participants. The hotel will provide breakfast, the workshop will offer lunch, and applicants will be responsible for their own dinner. Participants will arrive on July 19 and depart on either July 22 or July 23 (if selected for the INL tour).\nTo participate in STAR☆FIRE, applicants must be currently attending a U.S. university or be a recent graduate (graduation year 2024 or later). If an applicant has graduated and is employed, they may participate if selected, but INL cannot fund their travel/lodging.\nVenueJoin us at INL for a workshop that promises to be as educational as it is inspiring. INL is committed to ensuring a comfortable and comprehensive experience for all attendees.\nSTAR☆FIRE 2026 organizing team\n\nJackson Harter (chair)\nSonali Sinha Roy (co-chair)\nLibby Spangler, Katrina Lott and\nBrenda Monson from INL\nTheresa Cutler (co-chair) from\nLos Alamos National Laboratory\n\n \n Survey\n \n
