Single Well Seismic Imaging

This is a cooperative project between INL, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), with LBNL acting as the lead lab. Generally speaking, LBNL is responsible for all data acquisition and processing, SNL is responsible for earth modeling, and INL is responsible for design and testing of passive tube-wave suppression devices.

Cross-well seismic imaging applications have yielded a variety of tools and approaches over the past several years. It has become clear that this technology can be leveraged to address the next frontier in borehole seismology - that of single-well imaging. The objective of this project is to identify and provide solutions to fundamental issues surrounding single-well imaging to ensure the timely and cost-effective evaluation and development of the technology. The proposed work consists of four interdependent activities, each comprising facets of the technology that require further development to ensure the ultimate successful development of single-well seismic imaging.

A number of field tests have been performed in agreement with the Saltflank Imaging Consortium, an industry interest group. Most data acquired to date are proprietary, but will be published when approved by the consortium.
